Obama Pledges 'New Culture Of Accountability' At VA

Listen to ABC News Radio on iHeartRadio

President Obama promises a "new culture of accountability" at the troubled Veterans Affairs Department.  Speaking today at an American Legion convention in North Carolina, the President said reforms are being implemented to make the VA more efficient and more effective.

Obama recently signed legislation aimed at fixing the VA's longstanding and wide-ranging problems, including deep backlogs and long wait times for medical appointments. Many vets will now have the option of seeking private healthcare and more doctors and nurses will be hired.

Plans are also underway to expand VA facilities.  Former Procter and Gamble CEO Robert McDonald was unanimously confirmed by the Senate as the new VA secretary last month.  He replaced Eric Shinseki , who abruptly resigned in the spring.

The President promised the new regime at the VA will not tolerate corruption or incompetence.
